Artist's Comments

This was my final painting for my painting class last semester, and my mom has been bugging me to get it uploaded so she can see it, so...here it is. :)
This is the piece I did that I liked best from the class and my teacher liked least. He was big on sea-scapes and covered bridges and I think technically wanted something softer and more traditional portrait-ish. He didn't like that it was an unbalanced composition. He thought it was too graphic, not realistic enough. He really liked my water-colors, but this made him shake his head and give me a 'C'.
But you know what? It was my birthday and I reserved the right to paint what I wanted and I STILL like this painting. And you know what else? Even if YOU don't like it, I STILL like this painting. So there.

Anyway, another one I had to take a photo of and didn't come out quite true to life, though I don't think I lost quite as much as in the last one I uploaded...got a bit of light reflecting on the hair area, which makes the slight light and dark in the hair hard to see, and the colors are a bit off, but overall, not bad.

Acrylic, I don't know how many hours.

Beautiful! :D

As for it being unbalanced, I assume you mean having so much on the left, and so little on the right side? While it does make it heavier on one side, the "emptiness" on the left gives me a bit of a lonely feel, and suits the overall work. (Negative space for teh win!)

Very nice!

yeah...that's really what I was going for...I like the fact that an 'unbalanced' composition tends to make a viewer slightly more uncomfortable looking at it, and I really wanted that for this one...it's not an entirely serene, sweet image. But my teacher wanted the subject to touch all four sides of the canvas. Which he didn't relate to me until after I was about halfway through, of course. But I intentionally positioned it the way I did, so...sorry...ranting a bit. My teacher was, overall, very nice and easy going. We just kind of butted heads on this one painting.

Thank yo so much for the compliment and the fave!

Heh. I had to deal with lots of art teachers over the years. They can become very frustrating at times, even though they may be a good instructor.

Over all, it is an excellent work. I would have given it a B, if there was a question of if the work was what was assigned. However, a C is rude, verging on insulting.

To me, at least :D

I disagree with your teacher, I think it's a great composition.

To be fair, there were certain specifications for the project that I didn't really follow...but that is like, 90% because he didn't make me aware of those specifications until I was halfway into the project. But I still got a painting *I* like out of it, so...eh.
Thank you so much for the compliment. :)

Something about this makes me like it, but I'm not quite sure what. All I know is I'd have it on my wall :D
